Web design

A website whose job is to turn strangers into enquiries. Designed around what your customers need to know, then built to load fast and be easy to edit.

Most business websites are brochures. They describe the company, list the services, and wait.

The ones that work do a job instead. They answer the five questions a customer has before they’ll get in touch, in the order they ask them, and then make getting in touch obvious.

What a website has to answer

Somebody landing on your homepage is working through a list, usually in about five seconds.

What is this? Who is it for? Is it for me? Can I trust them? What does it cost, and what do I do next?

If your homepage doesn’t answer those, no amount of design will rescue it. That’s why design is the last thing we do rather than the first.

What you get

  • A design built for your business, not a template with your colours dropped in.
  • A fast, mobile-first build. Most people will see your site on a phone on a bad signal. If it takes five seconds, you’ve lost them before they’ve seen anything.
  • An editor you can actually use, and training so you’re not stuck.
  • SEO foundations built in, so the site has a chance of being found rather than needing rescuing later.
  • Words that sound like you, or guidance to help you write them.

What it looks like when it works

Rucklidge Law had a basic off-the-shelf WordPress site. We redesigned it into something that does the selling: conversion up by as much as 35%, load time down from six seconds to two, and the fees published so nobody has to ring up to ask.

Wolf Laundry were spending £3,000 a month on Google Ads and getting nothing back, because the site took ten seconds to load and over half the clicks never landed. Rebuilt, it now brings in 150 to 200 leads a month.

Fashion Toolbox had spent years on a Wix site that made a genuine expert look like a hobbyist. The new one sounds like her and convinces fashion brands she’s the right person for the job.

What it costs

From £5,000. Most established businesses land between £8,000 and £12,000, and anything with a shop, a booking system or a portal attached goes above that.

You get a fixed price before anything starts. The prices are on the website because you shouldn’t have to sit through a discovery call to find out whether you can afford us.

Questions we get asked about web design

How much does web design cost?
Ours start at £5,000 and most projects land between £8,000 and £12,000. Anything with a shop, a booking system or a member area attached goes above that. Our full pricing is on the website, including what moves the number up and down.
How long does it take to build a website?
Most go live in eight to twelve weeks. The design and the build are rarely what holds things up. Getting the words and the photography together is, so the more of that you have ready, the faster it moves.
Do you use templates?
No. Every site is designed for the business it belongs to. A £50 theme with your logo dropped on it is the thing most of our clients are coming to us to replace.
Will I be able to edit it myself?
Yes, and we’ll train you on it. It’s usually WordPress. You shouldn’t have to ring an agency to change a phone number.
Do you work with businesses outside Yorkshire?
Yes. We’re in Barnsley, and we work with organisations across the UK and abroad. Plenty of our clients we’ve never met in the same room.
What happens after it launches?
Launch is the start of the work, not the end of it. We host and look after sites through our sister company Better Hosting, and we keep measuring what’s working and sharpening it.
